A senior service center is a community focal
point where older persons can meet together, access a variety of
services and participate in activities that will enhance
dignity, support independence and encourage involvement in the
community. In addition senior service centers offer the
following services:
Information and Assistance Services:
Senior Centers are an integral part of a much larger caring
human service system. The center provides access to information,
advocacy and co-ordination with other service providers within
the network. Center staff is knowledgeable and willing to
assist.
Nutritious Meals:
Each center offers hot, nutritional balanced meals five days a week for those age 60 and over. Anyone under the age of 60 is welcomed to participate in the meal program and activities. The meal for under 60 is a set contribution rate.
Home Delivered Meals:
Meals can be delivered to homebound individuals who are unable
to prepare regular meals because of illness, injury or
disability. Not all sites provide home delivered meals and each
center has eligibility requirements.
Activities:
A wide variety of planned events are offered. Many centers have health education activities including blood pressure screening, foot clinics, exercise and strength training classes.
* Traditional activities including crafts, holiday parties, trips, pool playing and tournaments, dances, bingo and card parties are held. Most centers offer quilting and a wide variety of educational programs. *
